What should you focus on first as a newbie artist? Is it appropriate to say that it's your artistic style? What are you going to sculpt? What is your motivation for doing art? To be honest, you won't be able to master any of them until you've mastered the very basis of all talent: discipline.
To be successful, all beginner artists must first create a system that encourages them to be artists regardless of their level of inspiration. It's been stated that to truly master anything, you'll need 10,000 hours of practice. So, as an artist, how do you go from zero to 10,000 hours? Here are a few pointers:
It doesn't have to be perfect, and it doesn't have to be completed every day. But don't go a day without picking up a brush or a pencil! Perhaps you might designate a specific period of day for artistic endeavours. The goal is to include art-making into your daily routine, regardless of your painting medium.
Consider what you want to accomplish in a week, or a month, or a year. Most of all, make sure that these goals are achievable and not too overwhelming to achieve. For example, how many art works do you aim to complete each month? Make a list of goals that you can realistically reach and resolve to achieve them.
Start with basic forms and colours if you're having trouble getting started. Also, don't aim for sophistication or intricacy all of the time. Going back to fundamentals can be enlightening and invigorating at times.
Move away from reference images and toward real-life scenes as a source of inspiration so that you can paint or draw at any moment without having to prepare. Perhaps, you can start by keeping a little sketchbook and pen in your purse so that you can do some drawing while waiting in the car or at a coffee shop.
Last but not least, art necessitates practice. The only way to improve as a painter, sketch artist, or potter is to practice and practice some more. Art, like any other forms of expression, improves with practice. So get out there and make some art, even if it’s for your eyes only.
Not every piece of art created has to be a masterpiece that belongs in a museum. Let go of the pressure to create something perfect and focus instead on letting loose and enjoying the creative process!
